Kathryn Drager, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at The Pennsylvania State University. Her research centers on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), with a particular emphasis on supporting young children, beginning communicators, and children with autism as they develop foundational communication skills. Dr. Drager's work integrates developmental theory, evidence-based intervention, and interdisciplinary collaboration, and includes efforts to expand AAC access and culturally responsive intervention in low- and middle-income countries. Her research aims to advance AAC design and implementation to foster meaningful and equitable participation in diverse, real-world contexts.

Designing AAC Interventions That Prioritize Autonomy: Practical Approaches for Clinicians
Autonomy and self-determination are central to meaningful communication, yet they are not always considered holistically in day-to-day AAC intervention. This session presents practical, evidence-informed strategies for designing AAC interventions that prioritize user autonomy across diverse contexts. Participants will explore strategies that can be embedded into intervention planning and implementation, to facilitate autonomy-driven practices that strengthen agency, communication ownership, and participation outcomes for AAC users.
